Swimming & Diving Teams Split with Penn State Behrend

FROSTBURG, MD - In her final home meet, senior Cindy Reese (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) shattered the old 1-meter (11 dive) school record by almost 100 points as the women’s swimming and diving team beat Penn State Behrend, 135-93. The men’s 200-meter freestyle relay team set a new pool and team record, but FSU fell, 117-112, despite a late comeback.

Reese’s 11-dive total of 444.25 points demolished the old mark of 348.60 set by Julie Thornton. Reese also posted a six-dive mark of 252.45 to broke her own school record of 246.75 she set against Randolph-Macon earlier this season. Reese is now a provisional national qualifier in the 6-dive competition and a championship style 10-dive qualifier.

"Reese is just so exciting to watch and she has had an incredible season," said Head Coach Chip Villarreal. "She just keeps impressing me meet after meet as she sets new marks."

In women’s competition, freshman Kristin Moats (Loudoun County/Leesburg, Va.) topped her own team record of 2:40.65 in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:35.44. Moats also topped the mark set in the 100-meter breaststroke as she set both team and pool records with her time of 1:23.10.

Other winners for the women were freshman Heather Hamor (Lackey/Nanjemoy, Md.) in the 800-meter freestyle (10:20.02) and the 400-meter freestyle (5:03.04); senior Siona Walsh (Bellows Free Academy/Twin Falls, Idaho) in the 50-meter freestyle (30.95), sophomore Melody Hanna (Beall/Frostburg, Md.) in the 100-meter butterfly (1:16.52), and the 200-meter freestyle relay team of Moats, Hamor, Walsh and senior Jessie Bley (Gwynn Park/Ft. Washington, Md.) with a time of 2:00.44.

In men’s competition, freshman Chris Williams (Baltimore City College/Baltimore, Md.) captured three events and set a new team and pool record in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 55.41.

He also won the 50-meter freestyle (24.74) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:32.72).

Junior John Mayden (Arlington Baptist/Baltimore, Md.) earned FSU points by capturing two events. He won the 200-meter IM (2:20.05) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:11.45).

Both the Bobcat men and women are 5-4 on the season. FSU returns to action on Saturday when it visits Penn State Altoona at 1:00 p.m. The Bobcats then close out their season at the AMCC Championships held as part of the Grove City Invitational February 20-22.

"We look forward to finishing our season strong and feel confident we can make a statement in the next couple meets," said Villarreal.
