Frostburg State University is celebrating its recognition by the Colleges of Distinction organization, which identifies colleges and universities that excel in four key areas: student engagement, quality of teaching, vibrancy of the college community and success of graduates.

“These distinctions, which have long been the hallmark of a Frostburg State University education, highlight those vitally important parts of a student’s real college experience,” said FSU President Jonathan Gibralter.

“Schools designated as ‘Colleges of Distinction’ create well-rounded graduates and are among the very best in the country,” said Tyson Schritter, executive editor of Colleges of Distinction.

Colleges and universities are nominated for participation in Colleges of Distinction through high school counselors’ recommendations as well as quantitative research.

FSU was nominated by Middletown High School counselor Sue Mentzer-Blair, who said in her nomination letter, “I have been a high school counselor for 28 years, and Frostburg and its personnel rank as one of – if not the – finest examples of college preparation. From the initial contact with admissions and financial aid through the level of support for academics and the quality of the classroom experience, my students always report great satisfaction.”

Once nominated, the colleges are assessed using the Four Distinctions. Frostburg was found to excel in all Four Distinctions and will be profiled on the Colleges of Distinction website.

Among Frostburg’s distinctions are its emphasis on experiential education across all colleges, the strength of its first-year experience including learning communities and themed residence halls, the quality of teaching provided by FSU’s faculty, the students’ dedication to community service and sustainability, and the clear direction presented in the FSU Strategic Plan.

“For too long Frostburg has been Maryland’s ‘best-kept secret’ in higher education, and being recognized as a College of Distinction is an important step as we attract further national recognition and continue to raise the bar," Gibralter said. “I’m proud of the work that our faculty and staff have done as they work to constantly improve our students’ experience, and for the dedication they show to our students each and every day.”

The Colleges of Distinction website,, offers dynamic college profiles and search tools for students, parents and counselors. The website includes tips from high school guidance counselors, as well as essays from college students, presidents and other members of campus communities.

“While each school is one of a kind, they all share a common theme: They are all a great place to get an education,” Schritter said.

Situated in the mountains of Allegany County, Frostburg State University is one of the 12 institutions of the University System of Maryland. FSU is a comprehensive, residential regional university and serves as an educational and cultural center for Western Maryland. For more information, visit or
