Baseball Falls to Penn State Behrend in AMCC Championship Game

ERIE, PA - Top-seeded Penn State Behrend captured its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title with a 9-6 win over second-seeded Frostburg State Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (31-10) used a four-run sixth inning to snap a 4-4 tie with the Bobcats (31-10-1) in a mistake-filled game featuring seven errors.

Penn State Behrend jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first before Frostburg State countered with two runs in the top of the second.

Senior Bobby Farmer led off with a single, and senior Dave Sanchez later reached on an error which allowed Farmer to come home. Senior Mark Teson also reached on an error which plated Sanchez.

The Lions then pulled even in the bottom of the second before the Bobcats moved in front again, 3-2, with a run in the fourth.

Senior Pat Fortunato laced a one-out double and came home on a RBI-single by Farmer.

FSU's lead was short-lived again, as Penn State Behrend rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 advantage.

The Bobcats tied the game in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Sanchez, but FSU stranded two runners.

Penn State Behrend took control in the bottom of the frame thanks to a Bobcat miscue on what could have been an inning-ending double play ball.

The Lions then loaded the bases on a bunt single, and junior Mitch Reckner came through with a three-run triple to make it a 7-4 contest. Reckner later scored on a sacrifice fly to cap the outburst.

Penn State Behrend plated another run in the seventh to build an 9-4 lead, but FSU looked to rally in their final chance.

Junior Eric Edelmen started the ninth with a pinch-hit single and Teson followed with a walk. A wild pitch gave the Bobcats runners at second and third, and Davis followed with a two-run double to make it a 9-6 contest.

However, Penn State Behrend closed it out to claim their first league tournament crown.

Tony Kordecki went six innings and allowed just two earned runs to earn the victory.

Junior Brent Lutz took the loss in relief, giving up four earned runs in four innings.

Frostburg State now awaits a possible bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Tournament.
