Technological advances and cultural shifts are driving changes in 21st century education. Frostburg’s master of education – curriculum and instruction concentration provides an in-depth immersion in the exciting possibilities available to facilitate richer and more rewarding learning experiences in classrooms or seminar settings. This is a concentration developed specifically for on-the-job teachers and is tailored to address the latest educational reform initiatives. It is an outstanding opportunity for educators who would like to expand their role to take on curricular or instructional leadership responsibilities through such positions as professional development leader or grade-level lead.

  • Choose from three educational tracks to meet your career goals:
  1. National Board Certification- Starting the pathway toward becoming a National Board Certified Teacher
  2. Teacher Leadership – Desire to be a team or curricular leader in your school or county
  3. Educational Technology – Become more skilled in the use of technology in the classroom
  4. Elementary STEM Teacher - Learn transdiciplinary approaches to teaching focused on science and math
  • Complete the concentration either in Frostburg or Hagerstown. Courses are offered in the evening, with some in blended and online format to fit the working professional’s busy lifestyle.
  • Enter a masters program that is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education – NCATE.

  • Become skilled in the use of technology in the classroom and gain an understanding of advanced instructional design.
  • Complete an action research project to identify a technological need in the classroom; research and implement solutions and then analyze outcomes.

Instructional Design for Understanding- Consider instructional planning and design as a strategic educational process for impacting student learning and achievement. Learn research-based frameworks that have proven effective to enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for learning, and design instruction projects to meet the ever-changing educational landscape of the 21st century across all grade levels K-12.

Assessment and Accountability in the Context of Student Learning – Explore current trends and proven practices in educational assessment. Participants will design and evaluate a variety of approaches recommended for both traditional and alternative assessment of student growth and achievement.

Cultural and Technological Awareness in the Context of Global Education – Make a critical examination of the meaning of being an educated American in a changing world, and effectively educating culturally, ethnically, racially diverse and differently able students to meet demands of the 21st century. Complete a critical review of the role of technology as a key element in the changing picture of education globally, and the role of educators as agents of reform as intelligent consumers of emerging technology in the classrooms.
